Time Series Photometry of the Dwarf Planet Eris (2003 Ub313)

چکیده
The dwarf planet Eris (2003 UB313, formerly known also as “Xena”) is the largest KBO up to now discovered. Despite being larger than Pluto and bearing many similarities with it, it has not been possible insofar to detect any significant variability in its light curve, preventing the determination of its period

Size, density, albedo and atmosphere limit of dwarf planet Eris from a stellar occultation
We report the observation of a multi-chord stellar occultation by the dwarf planet (136199) Eris. The event was observed on November 6, 2010 UT, from two sites in Chile. Our observation is consistent with a spherical Eris with radius RE=1163±6 km, density ρ=2.52±0.05 g cm−3, and visible geometric albedo pV=0.96 −0.04. Besides being remarkably similar in size to Pluto, Eris appears as one of the...
متن کاملTentative detection of the rotation of Eris
We report a multi-week sequence of B-band photometric measurements of the dwarf planet Eris using the Swift satellite. The use of an observatory in low-Earth orbit provides better temporal sampling than is available with a ground-based telescope. We find no compelling evidence for an unusually slow rotation period of multiple days, as has been suggested previously. A ∼1.08 day rotation period i...
متن کاملPlanet Limits around the Pulsating White Dwarf GD 66
We present infrared observations in search of a planet around the white dwarf, GD66. Timeseries photometry of GD66 shows a variation in the arrival time of stellar pulsations consistent with the presence of a planet with mass ≥2.4MJ. Any such planet is too close to the star to be resolved, but the planet’s light can be directly detected as an excess flux at 4.5μm. We observed GD66 with the two ...
متن کاملThe mass of dwarf planet Eris.
The discovery of dwarf planet Eris was followed shortly by the discovery of its satellite, Dysnomia, but the satellite orbit, and thus the system mass, was not known. New observations with the Keck Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescopes show that Dysnomia has a circular orbit with a radius of 37,350 +/- 140 (1-sigma) kilometers and a 15.774 +/- 0.002 day orbital period around Eris. These o...
متن کاملPhotometric study of the variable star population in the globular cluster NGC 6397
We present the results of a photometric survey for variable stars in the central region of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. Time series photometry was obtained for 30 variable objects. The sample includes 12 new objects, of which 6 show periodic light curves and 2 are eclipsing binaries of unknown period. Six variables possess certain and three possess likely X-ray counterparts detected wi...
